• MCCS requires updates in our Constitution and By-Laws to be in compliance with regulations relating to Private Organizations aboard Camp Pendleton per MCO 5760.4C
  • A new version with updated language as unanimously approved.
• MCCS also requires update to the additional insured on our liability insurance, as follows:

    of Defense; United States Marine Corps; Commanding Officer, Marine Corps

• The archery committee will begin meeting separately due to the large volume of business.  It will report back to this meeting on more of an FYI basis.

Discussion of planned events 2011

• Save the date!  The Pendleton Sportsman’s Club Beach Day will be Sunday, July 17 from 1400 until sunset at Del Mar Beach. This is a family event to include a beach safety seminar, boogie boarding, body surfing, and a surf fishing seminar.  The club will provide hot dogs, buns, condiments, water, and soda.  Side dishes are pot luck.  An email announcement will be sent to all PSC members.
• August twilight fishing boat trip, TBD

Discussion of 2011 events

• The deadline for tags for the Fort Hunter Liggett elk hunt is June 2.  Don’t miss this world-class hunting opportunity.
• The Vandenberg Air Force Base hunt last month was postponed; it is closed to hunting until mid-June.

There will now be an archery committee meeting and work party on the first Saturday
of every month at the Cristianitos Archery Complex.  The next archery meeting is 4 June.

Mainside Range Update

• Road is repaired, thanks to Massari
• Metal frames, trash, old carpet targets being removed thanks to Massari and Skjei
• Signage will be installed stating the rules and promoting PSC membership
• Targets have been placed, but are in flimsy condition – planning to repair or replace them.
• The range will henceforth be named the “Rattlesnake Canyon Range”, since it is more descriptive of its actual location.

Cristianitos Archery Complex (CAC) Update

• KD Range targets have been replaced, donated by Bear State Archers, planning a letter of thanks
• Bowhunter course is approved by Range Ops.  Updated range regs, SOP, and safety class.
• Road work by 1CEB is nearly complete, planning a letter of thanks
• About half the bowhunter course is currently overgrown, is not in usable condition yet
• Shooting stakes and range targets still need to be set, range flag needs to be installed
• Discussion of creating a separate archery membership with additional dues in order to use the bowhunter course
• Instructions for use of new range to be sent to all archery PSC members, still TBD.

• Hunter Safety Courses are offered by the Game Warden’s Office (Building 2648).  This course is required to obtain a hunting license (if you don’t have one) and is valid for all states.  See the club website for details and the current schedule.

• The North Country Shootist Association is a great place to sight-in rifles (out to 890 yards).  It is located 5 miles east of Highway 15 on Interstate 76, on the Pala Indian Reservation. It is open Mondays 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM to non-members. Active duty Marines can shoot for a flat rate of $15 per day. Civilians can shoot for a couple days at $20 per day, and then will be asked to join the club ($50 per year). For more information, call Harold at 760-727-9160 or visit their website.

• Another good spot for sighting-in is the Escondido Fish & Game Association range. Details are online at http://escondidofishandgame.com/.

• An upgraded security system is now in place for civilian club members who are not affiliated with Camp Pendleton.  Any civilian Sportsman’s Club members who don’t have a permanent base access credentials should contact Glen Simmons (email or 949-492-4722) to be entered into the Camp Pendleton Security Database so they can gain regular access.  Otherwise, they can only enter the base 3 times in any 45 day period without this security clearance.

• A Range Safety Course is presented by SSgt Mark McKenna at the Game Warden’s Office (Building 2648). Please contact him directly at 580-483-3220 for details. This class is a prerequisite for use of the archery ranges aboard Camp Pendleton. He also teaches a beginning archery class once per month for those who have never shot before –same contact info for details.

• The Skeet and Trap Range is located at Area 25 (Vado Del Rio). It features three ranges – two are skeet trap ranges for American or International Skeet, and a third five-stand sporting clay range. Guns can be checked out for use on the range, ammo is available for sale, and instruction is available. The hours of operation for the Skeet and Trap Range are Wednesday through Friday 1100-1800 and Saturday/Sunday 1000-1700.  Further information is available at (760)725-4832.

• The Santa Margarita Gun Club (http://www.smgunclub.org) holds competitive shooting events; including CMP/NRA approved matches, as well as “open” practice dates, that take place at range facilities aboard Camp Pendleton.  Please visit their website or contact John
  Hermsen for details.

• The Escondido Fish and Game Association (http://escondidofishandgame.com) hosts a free junior rifle program several times each year. This is a great event to introduce kids to the shooting sports.  Shooters need not bring anything except themselves and a parent or guardian.  There is also a pistol program which is not advertised.  Contact the POC listed for Jr. Pistol to get on the list. That event runs every other month, alternating with the rifle program, but you must call the POC and get on the list because it fills up.

• CA GSP Rescue hosts Rattlesnake Avoidance Classes.  Learn the habits, locations, time, and weather in which rattlesnakes appear, as well as the “types” of snakebites, venom and the effects of envenomation.  Teach your dog to recognize the scent, sight and sound of a rattler via a series of scenarios which are increasingly difficult to detect.  The cost is $75 and requires a 50% deposit to reserve a space. There is a requested donation of $10 made payable to GSP Rescue for rechecks for previously trained dogs.  Class size is limited, reserve your spot soon.

• Pacific Coast Bait & Tackle in Oceanside is looking for part-time employees, which could be a nice opportunity for a Marine looking to earn a little extra money in a fellow sportsman’s shop. Contact PSC Member Fred Wolfrom for details (760-439-FISH).  They also offer a 10% discount for all PSC members.

MCCS updates in regulations relating to Private Organizations aboard Camp Pendleton

• Updates to constitution and by-laws will be presented to the board and membership for approval when complete

Suggestion that we engage MCCS to send base email notifications for PSC meetings and events.

Archery Range Update

• Drafting an MCCS support letter requesting help with PX items, target funding, and help advertising events.
• Updated range SOP (includes range rules and ORM)
• Updated safety class materials to reflect the current SOP and range regulations
• Road work by 1CEB resumes this week
• Clarified procedure for taking the archery safety class, civilians must be members first
• Bear State Archers donated 7 Excelsior targets for the CAC KD range, delivery date TBD
• A great deal of demand has been revealed for the Mainside Range, plan to return the KD range targets to the Mainside Range when the new ones arrive.
• Moving the storage unit from SOI to CAC requires a special truck, date TBD but soon
• Additional range safety mitigation (signs, flags, etc.) is complete
• Replacing the shoot/target flags with stakes has not been completed yet
• An inventory of targets, including their condition, as not been completed yet
• <Next Steps> Based on the above inventory, decide which targets will be placed on the bowhunter course and where

• The Escondido Fish and Game Association (http://escondidofishandgame.com) hosts a free junior rifle program several times each year.  This is a great event to introduce kids to the shooting sports.  Shooters need not bring anything except themselves and a parent or guardian.

• The North Country Shootist Association is a great place to sight-in rifles (out to 890 yards).  It is located 5 miles east of Highway 15 on Interstate 76, on the Pala Indian Reservation. It is open Mondays 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM to non-members. Active duty Marines can shoot for a flat rate of $15 per day. Civilians can shoot for a couple days at $20 per day, and then will be asked to join the club ($50 per year). For more information, call Harold at 760-727-9160 or visit their website.

• Jim Post announced a deal for a guided pheasant hunting trip in South Dakota.  The season is October through March.  Round trip air fares are as low as $300 round-trip (Allegiant Airlines from LAX) if booked well in advance.  Guided hunt packages range from $175 per day for just a hunt with dogs and lunch to $300 per day for the hunt plus dogs, motel, meals, and transport.

• Bear State Archers (located near Lake Henshaw) is offering a special membership deal for active duty and retired military.  Members get free admission to all tournaments and 24/7 access to the range.  Contact Bear State Membership Chairman Chauncy Newlin (760-743-6015) or Glen Simmons for details.

• There is only one hunter education class remaining this year – this weekend (14 November).
• The 2010 Rifle Deer Season will end one weekend earlier than planned.  The season will now end on Sunday, November 14 2010.  This is due to reduced deer population from fire and drought, as well as game management via calculation of “hunter effort”, which correlates the amount of game taken per the cumulative number of hunter hours in the field.
• The Game Warden’s Office will be open for Small Game Hunting only on Thursday, November 11 and Friday, November 12.  There will be no Deer or Waterfowl hunting on November 11 and November 12.
• Trying to secure an archery-only area, where bowhunters would not have to wear hunter orange.

  • The SOI KD range is open but the roving course is still closed.  The Mainside Range is open.
  • The SOP and cover letter to RSO was ratified.  Meeting with XO is pending, most likely in early December given calendars.
  • After the SOI range issue is resolved, will plan a meeting with Jennifer Webb (MCCS Liaison) to discuss PSC activities.
  • Harbin suggested gaining sponsorship from the trap/skeet program (also MCCS) as a shooting sport.

Fishing Committee (Seymour, Depew, McMurtrey)

•  Discussion of planned event #2 for 2010.  No discussion.  Depew will likely be relocating next year, need to find another active Fishing Committee member.

Hunting Committee (Berzins, Harbin)

•  Discussion of 2010 Pendleton Hunting Season.  The season has gone well under the circumstances.  We’re fortunate to have a good hunting program aboard Camp Pendleton.
•  Numerous bird hunting options were presented by Harbin.  Pheasant season starts this weekend, as well as the second half of dove season.
•  Another VAFB hunt next week. Berzins will be hunting Vandenberg AFB again on November 17.  Aivars will be happy to show any PSC members around if they would like to join him.  Vandenberg Lodging can be reached at 805-606-1844.  Please be sure to check space availability and reservations policies in advance.  Civilians are currently not allowed to hunt there.
