| Minutes of Pendleton Sportsman’s Club meeting on January 10, 2006
Call to Order. Meeting opened by President Dennis Loftis at 1836.
Introduction of distinguished guests

Approval of December’s minutes as published.
Report of Secretary / Treasurer. Given by President. New membership year started 1 October and previous annual membership dues expired September 30th. 37 Active paid members, 32 military / 5 civilians. Total $1678.46 in account.
Committee Reports
- Membership Committee – Club membership dues are $20 per year and are effective for one year from time of activation. Dues can be paid at Club meetings or mailed in. See the Club Website for mailing address at http://thesportsmansclub.netfirms.com.
- Buildings and Grounds – Future Club meetings will be at building number 24065 in the 24 area next to the PX and Gym. Please help spread the word of the new location.
- Publicity Committee – Club Patches are available from Steve Karns the Clubs Secretary / Treasurer. Please contact Steve at a meeting or event about purchasing your Club patch, cost is $5. Recommend Club members sew the Club patch on their hunting vests to publicize the Club.
- Hunting Committee
– Jeff Guilloz reported the Club’s quail hunt on January 7th was a big success. 15 Club members participated and hunted in Kilo 2 and India areas and took 15 quail. The Club will have another quail hunt on January 21st and a duck hunt on January 28th. Jeff will send out more information regarding both upcoming hunts.
- Hunters are reminded and encouraged to pick up their fired hulls when in the field. Also, help police trash found while hunting.
- The camouflaged netting available for the duck blinds will be signed for by Environmental Security and secured to the blinds by the Club members. The netting will be permanently attached to reduce unauthorized removal.
- Fishing Committee – Free fishing trips still available through the Dana Wharf Sportfishing. See Fishing News on the Clubs website for information and contact one of the coordinators.
Old and unfinished business
- Hunter Education Safety Course information
- Frank Alessio at the Escondido Fish and Game Association conducts the classes. To get more information contact him at 760-743-8718.
- Ed Watkins at the Murrieta Police Department conducts the classes. To get more information contact him at 951-461-7846.
- Fletcher Diehl conducts the classes. To get more information contact him at 619-448-3321.
- Rifle Sight-in / Familiarization Fire range dates have been approved for March 18th, April 15th, May 13th, June 24th, July 15th, August 12th, and September 9th.
- The Club still needs to get members qualified as Range Safety Officers (RSO) and Officers-In-Charge (OIC) by the Base and to complete an approved NRA course before we can conduct any live-fire range events. Any Club member can receive the training and become qualified as an RSO / OIC. The Base RSO / OIC course is given every Friday starting at 0700 in building 2399. Information about the NRA course is TBD.
- Discussion on when to perform clean up and maintenance on fishing areas at Lake O’Neill and Pulgas Lake proposed that the work be conducted beginning in February 2006. Further discussion and coordination is required and will be completed before actual work can begin.
- On Saturday, February 11th, 20 Club members and their families have been invited to participate in a duck hunt at the Green Head Shooting Club. Green Head Club is located East of San Diego off Interstate 8 and directions will be provided at the next meeting. The event will be totally free for these 20 Club members except for the cost of the CA State hunting license, and the State and Federal Duck stamps. The ammunition is included and shotguns are available. If interested please send your name and contact information to stevekarns@hotmail.com. If more than 20 Club members sign-up for the hunt a drawing will be held to identify the lucky shooters. Priority will be given to the younger Marines and Sailors. Please attend the next Club meeting and monitor your e-mails for more information.
New business
- The Club’s liability insurance is due on February 6, 2006 and the annual renewal cost is $450.00. A motion was passed to pay the renewal premium.
- The idea of hosting a Snake Break Class to teach your dog to alert you and avoid rattlesnakes was discussed. This class would be open to all interested parties and serve as a community service for the Camp Pendleton families. Dennis Loftis will obtain more information and present at next meeting.
- A Potluck dinner consisting of members hunting and fishing game will be planned for later in the year with the date to be determined at the next meeting.
- Members are encouraged to send emails to John Cullen, Vice-President of the Club, who is currently serving in Iraq at jdjrc@hotmail.com.
- Members are requested to review the current Hunting Program Base Bulletin and submit any recommended changes via email to Club Secretary Steve Karns at stevekarns@hotmail.com. The current bulletins will be posted on the Club website for your review. Your recommendations are critical to continue to improve the hunting and fishing opportunities on board the base. We have made tremendous progress and improvements this last year and we need to continue our efforts. Please review and make your recommendations they are important.
- The Sportsman’s Club was highlighted in the January / February edition of Ducks Unlimited magazine which is an international publication. In the article Club members discussed the hunting opportunities at Camp Pendleton as well as promoting the Sportsman’s Club. It was very impressive and significant for our Pendleton Sportsman’s Club to be recognized by the Ducks Unlimited Organization.
Vic Yoder
- Announced that hunting would be allowed on January 16th, Martin Luther King Day. He also mentioned that the camping program at Cocklebur and Red Beach have openings available for RV’s. An annual pass is required which is available at the Wardens Office Building (WOB) building 25155.
- The next Club meeting will be held on the first Tuesday of next month, February 7th at 1830 in building 24065. The date was changed because of Valentines Day, which is on the second Tuesday. So spend some time with your sweetheart so they will let you go out hunting and fishing when you want.
