Minutes of Pendleton Sportsman’s Club meeting on August 8, 2006

Call to Order.  Meeting opened by President Dennis Loftis at 1838.

Welcomed MSgt John Cullen, former Club Vice-President, back from Iraq.

Approval of July’s minutes as published.

Report of Secretary/Treasurer.  Dennis reported.  Account information; balance is $1,238.13, there are no outstanding checks or bills due.  The total member count is now 56, with 47 active military and 9 retired/civilians.  Some members still need membership cards; Dennis will bring some to next meeting.

Committee Reports

-Membership Committee.  Nothing new to report. Dues can be paid at Club meetings or mailed in.  See the Club Website for mailing address at http://thesportsmansclub.netfirms.com.

-Buildings and Grounds.  Club meetings will be at building number 24065 in the 24 area next to the PX and Gym.  The building key has to be picked-up from the MCAS Duty in building 23123.

-Publicity Committee.   Vice President, Gary Baumann, will place notice in Base newspaper announcing Rifle Sight-in at Range 103 on September 9th.  Dennis will make a flyer for distribution.

-Fishing Committee

  –Free fishing trips still available through the Dana Wharf Sportfishing.  See Fishing News on the Clubs website for information and contact one of the coordinators.  Active duty can go for free through the entire week.

  -Fishing poles were sent to Rob Shuford in Iraq.  More fishing tackle can be sent if appropriate.  Email sent to Rob requesting more information.

  -Fish with a Warrior Event.  On August 26th, the Bloodydeck anglers will be sponsoring a free half-day fishing trip on the Daily Double sportfishing boat out of Point Loma for military service members.  Contact Cpl Ed Schmitt at edward.j.schmitt@usmc.mil or edward_schmitt@hotmail.com if interested.

SALT water report-

-Fred Wolfrom from Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle reported that ocean fishing is excellent everywhere.  Dorado and yellowtail are within 4-10 miles of Oceanside. 

FRESH water report-

-Lake O’Neill- Water level low, all fishing is slow.

-Hunting Committee.  See Old and New Business sections.

Old and unfinished business

-Dennis, John Cullen, and Larry Miscall presented plaques to the Moore Group in recognition for the fabulous Greenhead Military Appreciation Family Day/Duck shoot last February.  The Moote Group volunteered to sponsor another event next February.

-The next Rifle Sight-in/Familiarization Fire range date is on September 9th.  Jimbo will coordinate range requirements. 

-The Club still needs to get members qualified as Range Safety Officers (RSO) and Officers-In-Charge (OIC) by the Base.  Any Club member can receive the training and become qualified as an RSO/OIC.  The Base RSO/OIC course requirements have changed, see attached RSO.zip file for more information.  Please support your club by getting you RSO cards.  Don Rostron and Chris Burge completed the NRA RSO Course.

-Base-hunting bulletin is not published yet.  Dennis will contact Vic Yoder for more information.

-Vandenberg AFB Pig Hunt.  No information, Joe Birmingham has taken this for action and will provide information at next meeting.     

-Jim Post was the only Club member drawn for a Hunter-Liggett elk tag.

New business

-Jeff Guilloz is organizing a Club Dove hunt for the season opener on September 2nd.  All members who are interested contact Jeff at 760-672-0688 or guillozjd@hotmail.com.

-2006/2007 hunting licenses.  Remember to get your Federal, State and on-base licenses renewed.  Federal duck stamps are available at the Main and Del Mar post offices. 

-Deer tag exchange can be done now at the Wardens Office Building (WOB).

-Archery bow season will be open on the weekends from September 16th to October 9th.

-Rifle/shotgun deer hunters safety brief will be given at the WOB on Saturday, September 30th at 0900; Wednesday, October 4th, and Wednesday, October 11th at 1730.

-Rifle deer season will be open on weekends and some holidays from October 14 to November 26th.

-Rainbow and Roscoe shooting ranges were discussed.

-Jim Post volunteered to be the Projects Committee leader.  Pending projects are building and repairing duck blinds, coordinating archery ranges, requesting approval for shotgun slug firing at Range 103, and requesting approval for blackpowder hunting on Base.

-Hunter Education Classes

  -August 26, Doug McClanahan will be conducting a one-day course beginning at 0800. Students must pass course test to receive Hunter Safety Certification card. For more information contact Doug at 619-445-2305 or 619-445-2107.

  -August 27, Larry Aney will be conducting a one-day course at the Joint Reception Center (JRC), building 130132 Mainside, from 0800-1800. Students must pass course test to receive Hunter Safety Certification card. For more information call Larry at 760-725-3360.

  -September 9 and 10, Frank Alessio will be conducting course at the Escondido Fish & Game association near Lake Wolford. Students must attend classes both days and pass course test to receive Hunter Safety Certification card. For more information call Frank at 760-743-8718.

The September Club meeting IS CHANGED TO THE FIRST TUESDAY, 5 September at 1830 in Bldg 24065.
