Base Game Warden’s Report

  • Game Warden Tom Lhuillier.  A request was made to all Sportsman’s Club members to pick up trash wherever we see it in the field.  Camp Pendleton is a unique ecosystem and it is a privilege to have it as a place to hunt with its many scenic areas.  Let’s all do our part to keep it beautiful and remove trash wherever we see it.

  • Wildlife Technician Mike Tucker provided an excellent update of the ongoing effort for refurbishing the Camp Pendleton water guzzlers.  Every Monday @ 0900 at the Wardens Office Building he will be leading a work party to continue cleaning and maintaining the existing 22 operative guzzlers that are located in the various areas of Camp Pendleton.  The last two Mondays he worked on maintenance of water guzzlers located in areas Delta, Echo, Golf and Hotel.

As a follow-on to last month’s presentation which described the total water guzzler project, Mike Tucker discussed his experience gained during the past week in helping the Mojave Desert National Reserve personnel on a similar water guzzler maintenance effort.  They were able to accomplish a lot of guzzler rehab including concrete and stucco repair of the guzzlers by camping out on site.

Recognizing that we can achieve similar results, in early September a major camp-out will be held to repair the 26 inoperative water guzzlers.  This project will entail cleaning out and repairing concrete catchments and spillways.  The Sportsman’s Club will keep the members apprised and will notify all when the planning is more complete and exact dates are certain.

Committee Reports

    • Both salt water and fresh water fishing has been productive.  With the warmer weather Bass are starting to hit various lures at local lakes and Crappie are hitting on Lake O'Neill.  Lake Wolford and Sutherland have both been good for Bass and Crappie.  Saltwater club members reported good catches of Ling Cod in the 10-lbs+ range at a depth of only 125 feet.
