Base Game Warden’s Report

Guzzler Update.  Mike Tucker, Base Wildlife Biologist Technician, continues to lead the effort for maintaining and repairing the water guzzlers.  The success of his efforts and that of the Camp Pendleton Sportsman's Club volunteers was shown in a presentation.  Many guzzler pictures of “Before” and “After” were shown as well as pictures of wildlife (deer, quail, fox, bobcats, mountain lions, and songbirds) drinking from the repaired guzzlers.  Because of the drought, these guzzlers are the only source of water in some of the remote areas.  Volunteers to help with the Guzzler program are greatly appreciated.  Some of the projects are guzzler resurfacing, guzzler research, refilling guzzlers, and installing new guzzlers.  Please contact Mike if you have interest in the ongoing Guzzler program and can volunteer: 760-725-3360 or michael.j.tucker@usmc.mil.

Committee Reports
  • Fishing Committee - Little to report as far as fishing action; everyone is hunting.
  • Hunting Committee
    • Pig Hunt is planned at Vandenberg AFB on 15-18 February 2008.  Your Camp Pendleton Sportsman's Club membership dues must be paid to participate in this event.  Roxanne Baxter has done an outstanding job in organizing this event and has published and disseminated all the information about Vandenberg AFB, game regulations, phone numbers and much more.  If you have any questions please contact Roxanne Baxter: roxannebaxter@msn.com
Old Business
  • Rifle Sight-in & Range Safety Officer Requirements:  Many members indicated their interest in having a rifle sight in at one of the Camp Pendleton ranges; the Pendleton Sportsman's Club is currently limited and still needs members qualified as Range Safety Officers (RSO) and Officers-in-Charge (OIC) by the Base.  If we do not have a qualified RSO & OIC a range cannot be scheduled.  The first step is to complete the Base on-line / CD training; these CDs are available on the Pendleton Sportsman's Club website, then complete the one day RSO class given the 1st Friday of each month in the Base Main Theater.  The NRA RSO course is also required and the Pendleton Sportsman's Club will pay for the NRA RSO course.  Please contact Dennis by email if you have any questions.  hollywoodusmc@earthlink.net.
  • Archery: If you wish to sharpen up your archery skills and receive some expert coaching, fill out the application for the El Toro-Pendleton Archers (ETPA) Club, on the Club website.  The Club has a 14-target 3D-field range and a practice area with targets ranging from 10 to 80 yards.   The 3D targets are a challenge covering critters from Woodchuck to Elk.   The ETPA Club members willingly provide expert guidance and archery equipment knowledge.

The ETPA also sponsors 3D tournaments as well as charity events. The SOI archery range is open daily from dawn to dusk.  Membership in the El Toro-Pendleton Archers Club is free for all Active Duty and Retired military.  Contact Kurt Muller for more information: Kurt.Muller@disney.com.
